Bahrain Sets Course for Carbon Neutrality by 2060

Bahrain has announced its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, with a comprehensive strategy that encompasses both public and private sector initiatives, according to Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif, the Kingdom’s Minister of Sustainable Development and Chief Executive of the Economic Development Board (Bahrain EDB).

Speaking at the recently concluded Gateway Gulf 2024 event in Manama, Minister Alkhulaif revealed that the government is actively collaborating with a small group of companies responsible for the majority of the country’s carbon emissions. “We are working closely with fewer than ten businesses that generate significant emissions to implement our Zero Neutrality plan,” she explained.

The initiative aligns with the Paris Agreement’s objectives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate global temperature rise. Bahrain’s commitment comes amid growing international concern about the potential consequences of current climate conditions.

In a significant development, the Minister disclosed plans for the Kingdom’s largest renewable energy project to date, with details forthcoming. “We are accelerating our efforts in renewable energy deployment,” Alkhulaif stated, highlighting ongoing initiatives such as the installation of solar panels on government buildings. She acknowledged the challenges posed by limited space for large-scale solar farms but emphasized the government’s determination to overcome these constraints.

The Economic Development Board has already demonstrated its commitment to sustainable development by securing $16.65 million in expected investments from three Indian companies specializing in industry, renewable energy, and information and communications technology (ICT).

The Gateway Gulf 2024 event, which concluded on November 4, proved highly successful, generating more than $12 billion in agreements and deals. The event also showcased the strong regional partnerships between Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, particularly in finance, economy, and investment sectors.

Minister Alkhulaif emphasized that Bahrain’s approach to sustainability extends beyond environmental considerations to encompass social, economic, and developmental aspects. “Our vision of sustainability includes improving financial accessibility for pensioners and streamlining payment systems between companies and individuals, leveraging Bahrain’s robust financial sector,” she said.

The Kingdom is also investing in future generations through educational initiatives. The Minister highlighted ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Education to incorporate sustainability awareness and training into school curricula and university programs, ensuring that young Bahrainis are prepared to contribute to the country’s sustainable development goals.
