The International Geotechnical Innovation Conference (IGIC UAE 2024) recently concluded in Dubai, bringing together engineers, researchers, and industry professionals to discuss developments in ground engineering and construction techniques. The two-day event, held at Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, focused on addressing regional infrastructure challenges and environmental considerations.
Dr. Ala Sainak from ADNOC coordinated technical sessions that examined how geotechnical engineering—the science of building on and with earth materials—can adapt to modern challenges. German professor Rolf Katzenbach from Technical University of Darmstadt presented methods for reducing environmental impact in foundation construction, while Switzerland’s Prof. Lyesse Laloui introduced techniques for strengthening desert soils using biological processes.
A significant portion of the conference addressed local construction challenges. Dubai Municipality’s Dr. Tamer Al Hafez presented updates on the city’s underground tunnel projects, while construction firms EBI and Bauer Maschinen shared new methods for measuring and improving soil stability. These technical discussions were balanced with examinations of practical applications, including coastal development projects that aim to minimize environmental disruption.
The second day featured case studies from around the Gulf region. ARQ Partners’ Astrid Aubury discussed dam construction challenges in Oman, while Dr. Khalid Al Bloushi from UAE University explained how geological studies inform Abu Dhabi’s building permit process. Technology companies Fugro and Geobear demonstrated how data analysis and new materials are changing ground improvement methods in Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
The conference concluded with sessions on sustainable construction practices and their implementation in real-world projects. Participants examined how environmental protection can be integrated into major infrastructure developments while maintaining structural integrity and safety.
For engineers and construction professionals, the conference provided technical insights into foundation design, soil improvement, and monitoring systems. For city planners and developers, sessions highlighted ways to balance urban growth with environmental stewardship, particularly in challenging desert environments.
